L135: The First-Gen College Student Perspective Full!

Teachers: Richard Garcia

L124: Hacking Hackers
Difficulty: *
Teachers: Nate Delgado

You know about the ridiculous news stories
and movies about hackers that usually show a guy in a ski mask hunched over a laptop? Well, regardless of how poorly
the media talks about hacking, it is a real threat faced by the millions of Americans who don’t bother informing themselves
of the basics of staying safe online. It’s almost every week that news comes out about a massive hacking of credit cards,
phone numbers, addresses, and more. This is not the type of boring course your school librarian would teach, droning on about avoiding “inappropriate” websites or staying away from “scary” chatrooms full of per-
verts. This is a course that will teach you the ins and outs about how to ensure that your personal information will stay private. We’ll cover current events in computer security, try out various forms of password cracking, talk about how dumb Americans are, discuss the importance of using strong passwords, and maybe have some fun along the way. And, I’ll teach you how to pick locks, seriously.

L139: Personal Finance and Career Development
Difficulty: **

Students will learn basic financial literacy and topics include banking, budgeting, and applying for financial aid. A portion of the class will be devoted towards part-time job hunting tips and career development. The course will be a combination of both lecture and discussion; students should expect to engage in different activities like making a budget and mock-interviewing.

L131: Self Defense and Grappling Full!
Difficulty: *
Teachers: Killian Clifford

This class will teach some basic elements of self-defense including, but not limited to: proper fighting stance, strikes, throws, blocking, ground submission techniques, and more. We will also be going over some general knowledge, like which parts of your body are most powerful in certain situations, as well as which parts of your opponent's body are most vulnerable in different positions. Toward the end of class, everyone will have the option to grapple with each other on the safety mats. This means you will be on your knees and attempting to submit your opponent using the techniques you've learned without actually hitting each other (your goal is not to hurt them, but to put them in a position where they are uncomfortable and have to tap out). Finally, you will need to wear athletic clothing and you MUST wear socks. If you do not have socks on the day of class, we will try to accommodate, but it is unlikely that you will be able to participate. Whether you are the smallest kid in your class or the bulkiest, whether you're a boy or a girl, I strongly encourage any of you to take this class because with enough practice, anyone can use these skills to give themselves an edge against a potential attacker. I'll see you all on Splash day!
